This adventure begins with a high altitude drive along the Friendship Highway to Lhasa. En route we stop at the main settlements of the Tibetan Plateau and visit Sakya and Tashilumpo Monasteries. We spend three days guided sightseeing in Lhasa, acclimatising to the altitude of the Forbidden City. We visit the spiritual centre of Tibet, the Jokhang Temple, with its many shrines and murals.
The architectural wonder of the Potala Palace contains over one thousand rooms and is the focal point of the city. It is a 45km drive to Ganden , a major monastery of the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism, which is now largely in ruins. Our trekking route leads over the high passes of the Jooker and Sukhe La to luxuriant alpine meadows before descending to the semi arid environs of Samye. We have allowed five days to complete this pilgrimage route between two of the most important monasteries in Tibet, before flying back to Kathmandu.
